Fish length to Weight conversion calculation

After discussions with ORI, we have decided to use the SASAA length to weight conversion formulas for all of our catch and release competitions. This data has been put into our competition software and will automatically calculate the weight from the length.

Please note that you might find two types of data: a formula where you type in the length and it calculates the weight, and a lookup table where you look through a long list of lenghts and then find the corresponding weight. We will be using the formula method.

It is simply a logarithmic and exponential formula with two variables for each species.

You can download the calculator spreadsheet from www.sasaa.co.za

They also have a nifty SMS system where you can send the length and species to 35010 and they will get back to you with the weight (read more below for more info and for the download)

 Conversion table:

SMS system:

Just sms the keyword FISH, the name of the species and the length of the species to 35010 .  Within seconds an sms will be sent to your cellphone with the weight, as well as the size limit (SL), the daily bag limit (BL) and the closed season (CS) for the specific species.

Your sms should be in the format: fish:speciesname:length

 Also, remember to:

  • Separate the keyword FISH, the species’ name and the length by using a colon (:)
  • Don’t use any spaces or apostrophes in your sms.
  • Quote the length in centimeter.
  • You can use either the Afrikaans or English name of the species.
  • You can use either upper case, lower case or a combination in your sms.
  • To specify the sex, enter either an M or F in brackets after the species’ name.
  • Examples of valid sms’s are:

Fish:raggie(f):106

Fish:spottedgullyshark:112

fish:kob:67
