Organizing a fishing trip to Malindi during the last week of October has become an institution to me over
the last eight years. Somehow, the fishing and people got into my blood and I can’t seem to get enough of the
place. Our party to Malindi consisted of eight anglers and we again organized accommodation at The Driftwood Club
and boats through Kingfisher fishing. Club Members in this year’s party were Hannes Schreuder, Jannie Britz, Andre
Mostert as well as Johan and Gawie Bruwer. The rest of our party included Steve Potter, Pierre van Vollenhoven and
Hans Hanekom.
We arrived in Malindi on 23/10/2010, relaxed the Saturday and went for a dive at the nearby marine reserve
on Sunday. Sunday 24/10/2010 night we went to the Malindi Boat Club and joined in the festivities of the late
Herbie Paul Competition, resulting in some early morning blues Monday morning.
Monday 25/10/2010: Our first day’s fishing proved the worst day I have ever had fishing in Kenya. It appears
even fish and not only wives, can give you the cold shoulder after too many festivities on our part the night
before. Surely, things could only improve.
Tuesday 26/10/2010: Our second day’s fishing started at 2 pm, aiming for the North Kenya Banks, 40 miles
North-East into the Indian Ocean. Jigging on this bank is unbelievable, with great numbers and sizes of Groupers,
Snappers as well as Amber-jack caught. Johan Bruwer hooked a 32 kg Amber-jack, a fish and fighter of note!
The way back proved just as exiting. Jannie Britz and I hooked and released a Stripe Marlin each. Hannes
Schreuder also had a lucky strike, but unfortunately lost his. A large number of Yellow-fin Tuna were also
caught.
Wednesday 27/10/2010: Day three proved another great day’s fishing. Multiple Sail-fish, Wahoo (up to 25
kg) and tuna were caught. This continued on Thursday 28/10/2010. Every member of our fishing party caught at least
one Sail-fish, making all members of the “Bill-fish Club”.
Unfortunately the Somali Pirate-threat is serious and real off the East-African coast. We had to sign
indemnity prior to our trip to the North Kenya Banks. A large number of floating petrol-cans served as a reminder
of this reality. These must have been from a Pirate vessel sunk by Spanish navy ship with the pirates
arrested.
Kenya maintains great Colonial values in its Hotels. Sea-food is amazing and cheap and we made sure we
used the opportunely fully. We sponsored a Lobster Braai at the Club on the Thursday-night, after which some money
was lost at the local Casino. The Tusker beer is good and proofed to have little ill effects on hot tropical
nights.

Visiting Malindi is a must for serious fishing at very reasonable rates. The whole trip, including
air-fare, accommodation and fishing cost +/- R21 000.00 pp. This includes ample drinks, breakfast and supper at the
Driftwood and lunches on the boats. The crews are very friendly and knowledgeable, the boats good and the fishing
exceptional.
All this adds to the excitement of a great fishing adventure, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. My booking
is in for the same time next year!
